Throughout the series he explains his plans by directly speaking into the camera ― a technique that has been used in many TV series, often to bad effect. But Spacey’s natural and skillful acting makes it work.

One of the more common comments about the show is that “it makes TV network executives nervous”. If a TV series that didn’t even air on TV can do that, I can’t think of a reason why you shouldn’t give House of Cards a try.

Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) has quit her position as press aide in the White House to set up her own crisis management firm. She handles scandals for clients, most of whom are public figures or belong to the political elite.

TV series Scandal sounds like, and to some extent is, another cliched political drama about the bloody power struggles that go on behind the walls of the US Capitol and White House.

But when a newly hired amateur lawyer who works for the legendary Pope says “I want to be a gladiator in a suit”, it gives the show another dimension – subordination.

Gladiators, although treated like celebrities in Roman times, could not change their subordination to their master. In an era in which materialism prevails, aren’t we also subordinate to our desires, just like slaves? The real question, “what and who are we fighting for”, is often overlooked by political thrillers that put too much focus on complicated schemes and conspiracies.

Most of Pope’s clients, unsurprisingly, are subordinate to power, money and fame – but not themselves. They lie to get what they want. In order to cover up a scandal they’re willing to do even more scandalous things.

Pope is the person these people turn to when they prepare to put morals and justice aside in order to cling on to what they think is important. And Pope always gets them through the tough times, even if sometimes involves hurting innocent people. Once the job is done she says stylishly into her phone “It’s handled”.

But it seems that Pope herself is not subordinate to money, power or fame. She decides whether to take a case or not by looking into her clients’ eyes. This seemingly irrational act serves to indicate her subordination to emotion.

It’s never explained why she quit her dream job at the White House. But through the storyline it becomes clear that Pope’s feelings for the president, with whom she had an affair, often clouded her judgment. Ironically this turns our protagonist, who helps others fight off scandals through her judgment, into the subject of a scandal herself.

The manner in which TV series in the UK are aired can be highly frustrating at times. Sometimes you only get three episodes of a show and then nothing else for a couple of years.

One such exciting idea is the mini-series Black Mirror. Aired on Channel 4 in the UK, it’s a series of three unrelated one-hour short movies that all offer a twisted commentary on technology.

Charlie Brooker, creator of the series, described Black Mirror as being about “the way we live now — and the way we might be living in 10 minutes’ time if we’re clumsy”.

"You set a crook to catch a crook. We put the big honey pot out there and all the flies came to us." ——Mel Weinberg, 60 Minutes, April 12, 1981

1. How long had Mel Weinberg been living a life of crime prior to his capture?

As indicated in the American Hustle movie, prior to his capture by the FBI, Mel had been living a life of delinquency ever since he was a boy growing up in the Bronx. It was then that he stole gold stars from his teacher's desk in order to show his mother what an excellent student he was. When his father's window-glass business was on the rocks, a helpful Mel drove around town in a Cadillac, shooting out windows with his slingshot. His father's business surged. His delinquency as a juvenile eventually evolved into large scale swindles as an adult. -Washington Post

2. Why did confessed con man Mel Weinberg agree to help the FBI?

The real Irving Rosenfeld, Mel Weinberg, had been running get-rich-quick schemes that mainly included insurance fraud and various other investment scams. His swindling days ended when the FBI nabbed him for operating a bogus international banking and investment firm, London Investors, out of a furnished leased office in Melville, Long Island.

Weinberg's luck ran out in 1977 when a real estate man from Pittsburgh reported him to the FBI. Arrested along with his mistress Evelyn Knight and conspirator Patrick Francis, he was indicted by a federal grand jury for mail fraud, wire fraud and conspiracy. Unlike what is seen in the movie, the real FBI agent behind Bradley Cooper's character Richie DiMaso, whose actual name is Anthony Amoroso, was not on hand for Mel and Evelyn's arrest. Agent Amoroso didn't meet con man Mel Weinberg until after Weinberg agreed to a deal to help the FBI. -NJ.com
——NJ.com

Knowing that prison was Weinberg's only option, FBI agent John Good, who was in charge of the Abscam operation, made a deal with Weinberg in hopes that he could lead the FBI to more white collar prey. Like what is shown in the movie, Weinberg agreed to work on four cases in order to keep himself and his mistress out of jail. Once those cases were completed, Weinberg agreed to continue to work for the FBI, leading them to uncover the political corruption that the Abscam operation became known for. -60 Minutes
